I am not alone in my inescapable inundation with the problems plaguing our world. Every day, I lament an earlier time — not that the past was more peaceful or serene, but that concerns were far more local. In the modern age, you’re expected to keep your finger on the pulse of every national scandal, every international development. My brain isn’t made for that, this constant pursuit of the tiger of current events crawling forth never to rip out my throat but instead to simply keep me fleeing in one direction or another so my soul can never rest. At the same time, looking away from these horrors bearing down upon you is seen as a sign of ignorance instead of self care. A cruelty, to peel yourself away from the mangled corpses of children in Palestine or the descent of the western world into fascism. Say you can’t handle it, and you’re accused of selfishness, a crime of morality to want to walk through a single day without being stalked by the tiger of current events.
Every space I’m in eventually dissolves into global politics, talks of genocide. I can’t ever catch a break. No watching funny animal videos without a call to action to donate to a campaign or buy something or or or.
The noise is too much for me. I wake up in the early morning panicked that I’m not doing enough, but I don’t know what I could possibly be doing more from my place thousands of miles across the ocean.
